Toys R Us has appointed its first ever chief technology officer, as it looks to implement a new digital roadmap.

Toy and baby products retailer, Toys R Us, has appointed its first chief technology officer (CTO) as it looks to implement a new digital roadmap.

Lance Wills will join the company as executive vice president and global CTO on 13 June, reporting directly to chairman and CEO, Dave Brandon.

Wills' responsibilities will span global IT and digital strategy for the company, where he will look to join up the use of data and business operations. In addition to governance and infrastructure, the new recruit will oversee the strategy, design and implementation of the business's drive to improve the customer experience across various channels.

Prior to joining Toys R Us, he was vice president and global head of digital technology at American Eagle Outfitters (AEO), leading the retailer's online and in-store technology groups, and those of AEO's subsidiary brands. Previously, he served as VP for direct and omnichannel technologies at department store chain, Macy's.

Phillip Newmoyer, who recently joined Toys R Us as senior vice president and chief information officer to oversee the IT portion of the company's move to bring eCommerce in-house, will report to Wills.

CEO Brandon commented: "As we work towards creating a world-class customer shopping experience and revolutionising our digital strategy, we are excited to welcome Lance to this new key role within the organisation.

"Lance has the talent, experience and leadership qualities that will be instrumental in helping position our IT and digital teams for success in the company's journey to growth."

Toys R Us also recently announced the appointment Andre Javes as the retailer's president for the Asia Pacific region. Having joined the business last week, he will oversee all operations for the company's growing number of stores in Japan, south-east Asia, Greater China and Australia.
