Shell Retail agrees new iPad point of sale deal

Selected Shell Retail sites around the world will serve customers with iPad-based point of sale technology following the fuel retailer's new deal with Revel Systems.

Shell Retail will be using iPad point of sale (PoS) in selected sites around the world, after it announced yesterday (Thursday 8 September) that it will be using Revel Systems' technology off the back of a successful proof-of-concept period.

Revel's native cloud platform and open API business model allows it to integrate with companies and their other ecosystem partners, and the real-time data reporting and modern hardware is expected to boost Shell's capacity to make operational decisions based on up-to-date business intelligence.

In addition to taking payments and accepting customer loyalty programmes, Revel says its platform's capacity to provide store inventory information means Shell is able to use its "site systems as a service".

Maggie van't Hoff, CIO at Shell Retail, commented: "Improving our customer journey and experience whilst keeping all of our sites running with quick and easy service is paramount.

"With Revel Systems we are implementing new tablets and payment options that are easy to use, innovative and will improve the customer experience so that customers keep coming back to Shell."

Bloomberg reported last month that IBM is currently in talks to acquire Revel Systems, according to someone close to the deal. If accurate, it would appear the tech giant is looking to reinforce its retail technology proposition after the 2012 sale of its PoS business to Toshiba Tec.
