Toys R Us stores will soon be selling 3D printer technology in its UK stores and online following the launch of a new partnership with supplier XYZprinting.
It marks the first time a toy retailer in the UK has invested in a dedicated 3D printer range, and suggests the company sees the technology as playing a key role in consumers' homes in the years ahead.
The printers – which are sold at prices starting at £239.99 – feature as part of Toys R Us's new range of high-tech toys and products, which also includes robotics and drones. The printers will be offered in selected stores this year, with the full range available online.
Andy Brocklehurst, director of merchandise for Toys R Us, commented: "Technology continues to evolve rapidly, so it's more important than ever for children to experience and enjoy tech and gadgets that will shape their future.
"XYZprinting's range of plug-and-play 3D printers are specifically designed for people with no prior knowledge, so they're perfect for families looking to explore the possibilities together, as well as being tremendous fun."
3D printing is still at a nascent stage in terms of its wider impact on the retail industry, although companies such as Office Depot and Staples stock products of this nature and offer businesses 3D printing services. However, John Lewis's start-up accelerator programme, JLAB, this year includes a company called Robotical as a finalist.
Robotical is the business behind Marty the Robot, a customisable and fully programmable robot for kids and educators, to help boost learning around programming, electronics, mechanical design, robotics – and 3D printing.
